Michael Jackson Hologram bei Billboard Music Award 2014

Beitragvon Remember MJ » 17. Mai 2014, 20:45

Judge rules Billboard Awards OK For MJ Hologram

By MICHELLE RINDELS, Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A federal judge ruled Friday that the Billboard Music Awards can use a hologram of deceased pop icon Michael Jackson at this weekend’s show, rejecting efforts from tech companies seeking to block the digital performance.

Judge Kent Dawson said there wasn’t enough evidence to show the planned 3-D image would violate patents held by Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd.

The companies own rights to technology known for digitally resurrecting deceased rapper Tupac Shakur at the 2012 Coachella music festival.

“The court’s decision is not surprising,” attorney Howard Weitzman, who represented Jackson’s estate and dick clark productions, wrote in an email. “The request to stop this extraordinary Michael Jackson event was ludicrous.”

Plans to use the hologram during the show Sunday emerged with the lawsuit, but they weren’t confirmed until the hearing Friday afternoon. Show producers had been promoting only a “history-making performance” at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena that would promote the singer’s latest posthumous album, “Xscape.”

Hologram USA and Musion said in their emergency lawsuit Thursday that one of their products was being used without authorization by a competitor to create a segment that depicts Jackson performing a new song, “Slave to the Rhythm.”

Dawson noted that the lawsuit didn’t provide evidence that the company’s patents were being used to create the Jackson hologram, and attorneys for the defendants said the techniques being used were in the public domain. Technology and visual tricks that can create holographic-type images have existed for decades, although the Shakur performance sparked more interest in creating realistic performances of dead celebrities.

Attorney Michael Feder, representing the show and Jackson estate, filed a response Friday, saying the holographic performance had been planned for months and was discussed with Alki David, who owns the rights to the technology that creates and projects lifelike images to appear alongside live performers through Hologram USA and Musion.

Plaintiff’s attorney Ryan G. Baker said his clients were disappointed with the ruling, but the lawsuit will continue.

“It’s only the very beginning of a case that will continue to be prosecuted by my clients, and ultimately they are confident that they will prevail and will recover all available damages for the defendants’ infringing conduct,” Baker said.

Hologram USA obtained the rights to the patents after the bankruptcy of Florida effects house Digital Domain, which created the Shakur image to wide acclaim two years ago.

The lawsuit also named John C. Textor, the chairman of Florida-based Pulse Entertainment Corp. who was the former head of Digital Domain. Pulse is accused of using the hologram techniques without a proper license. Textor said he could not comment publicly on the case.

The lawsuit names Atlanta-based Pulse Entertainment Inc. as a defendant. Spokesman Ken S. Johnson said the company was listed incorrectly because it had no connection the Billboard Music Awards.

Billboard Producer: Michael Jackson Event: ‘It’s Amazing’

Larry Klein also discusses other highlights of Sunday’s awards, including Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull premiering the official anthem of this year’s FIFA World Cup.

“It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen,” says Larry Klein, the executive producer for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. Klein is referring to the Michael Jackson event slated for this year’s show timed with the release of Jackson’s new posthumous album “Xscape” (out last Tuesday, May 13 on Epic). Though details of the experience have yet to be fully revealed, Klein’s endorsement means more than most.

Over the course of his 40-year-plus career at Dick Clark Productions, Klein has seen performances by everyone from Prince to Madonna to Paul McCartney to, well, Michael Jackson AND Paul McCartney . . . together. “I was working late one night and got a call to go over to Michael Jackson’s house,” Klein recalls. “I was very busy and had a lot of work to do but the person kept saying, ‘This is important, just get over here.’” So I drive over there and knock on the door and it’s Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney and they’re recording together!”

Similarly, Klein’s highlight picks for this year’s BBMA are also exclusive: Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood‘s debut performance of “Somethin’ Bad,” a duet featured on Lambert’s upcoming album, “Platinum” (set to drop June 3), as well as Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull premiering the official anthem of this year’s FIFA World Cup, “We Are One (Ole Ola).” “It’s those exclusive things you won’t get anywhere else that make the Billboard Music Awards so great,” he says.

Adding to the star power, beyond top BBMA finalists Imagine Dragons, Lorde, and Justin Timberlake was this week’s announcement that triple-threat rapper, producer and actor Ludacris is hosting Sunday’s show. “I know him personally,” Klein says. “He’s a talented musician, actor, entertainer — he’s going to be just great.”

For someone who is only 96 hours out from one of the year’s biggest awards show, Klein is remarkably well-composed. He’s currently going over the run of show, editing script, making sure the production runs smooth. He credits his team at dcp executive producers Allen Shapiro and Mike Mahan and producers Barry Adelman and Mark Bracco with getting this far. And the team has a lot to measure up to with 2013′s banner year which saw the viewing audience hit 9.5 million, a 28 percent spike over 2012′s audience, according to Nielsen.

Billboard awards can use Michael Jackson hologram, judge rules

Michael Jackson will Moonwalk again.

The late King of Pop will perform during the Billboard Music Awards –- as a hologram.

Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd. filed an emergency suit Thursday, alleging one of their products was being used without their permission by a competitor to create an image that will depict Jackson performing “Slave to the Rhythm,” a cut taken from his posthumous new album “Xscape.”

While the companies own the rights to the technology that famously raised Tupac Shakur from the dead at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival in 2012, a judge said there wasn't enough evidence to show the planned 3D image would violate patents. Hologram USA acquired the rights to the patents after Digital Domain, which created the Shakur image, went bankrupt.

Judge Kent Dawson also said the compaines failed to provide sufficient evidence that their patents were being used to create the Jackson hologram, according to the court order obtained by The Times.

Details on the spectacle have been kept tightly under wraps. Show producers have called it a "history-making performance" and a source close to the production promised the “technology is so spectacular and groundbreaking.”

The 2014 Billboard Music Awards will air live (except on the West Coast) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC.

King of Pop: Michael Jackson kehrt als Hologramm zurück

Michael Jackson's Hologram Performs @ Billboard Music Awards 2014

www.dailymotion.com Video From : www.dailymotion.com

Später twitterte P. Diddy (44, 'Last Night'), wie sehr ihm die Show gefallen habe.

MJ Hologram Rocks Billboard Awards: Go Behind Scenes
By Phil Gallo, Las Vegas / Billboard

The Michael Jackson performance on the 2014 Billboard Music Awards was the result of nearly half a year of planning, choreography and filming, not to mention the development of new technology. Producers of the Billboard Music Awards did not see even a portion of the film until eight days before the broadcast.

“We’ve been talking about it for the last five months and while we were talking about it they were still inventing the process,” says BBMA director and producer Larry Klein. “It was really strange talking about something that did not exist.”

Jackson, in hologram form, performed “Slave to the Rhythm” midway through Sunday night’s show with a five-piece band and 16 dancers live onstage. Jackson appeared in gold jacket, white T-shirt and brick red trousers on a set modeled on the art work for the album “Dangerous,” an appropriate choice as the track was recorded in 1991 with L.A. Reid and Babyface during the sessions for that album. Released this week on “XSCAPE,” which is neck-and-neck with the new Black Keys album for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week, the track was produced by Timbaland.

BBMA producers Dick Clark Productions built a special stage at the rear of the MGM Grand Arena that was used only for the Jackson performance. Dancers moved through aisles as Jackson was seen rising from a throne, walking down steps before going into several trademark routines, a moonwalk being one of the them. Lasers, streams of flames and dancers in ancient costumes were part of the film.

Klein shot it to give the presentation the feel of a live performance. “You were watching the magic of Michael Jackson just like you would have when he was performing,” says Klein.

The selection of “Slave to the Rhythm” for the hologram performance was made late last year; Jackson associates the Talauega brothers and Jamie King were brought in to choreograph and direct the video, which was produced by Pulse Evolution and Tricycle Logic.

“At the time we made the decision,” says Jackson’s lawyer and adviser John Branca, “‘Slave to the Rhythm’ felt like a song was something people could dance to, a potential club song. We talked to Jamie King, who directed the Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil shows and we all felt the song was very likeable.”

The Talauega brothers, Rich and Tone, were brought on right after the new year and they started to draw up dance moves for Jackson and the other dancers in the film. Their involvement with Jackson dates back to the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards; they also choreographed the HIStory tour in 1997 and if one had to guess, the image of Michael used in the performance appears to be from that era based on his hair and clothing.

“We knew we didn’t need to go so far left field with his dance moves — we just kept it within his world,” Rich Talauega says. “Its just the way you reconfigure his steps so it looks different. You’re still speaking the same language, it’s just a different dialect.”

Tone Talauega, who was still in high school when he started working with Jackson, says they studied the singer’s moves and had small things adjusted – the angle of a hand, the tilt of his head. The performance is “classic Michael, but we put our spice on it,” he says.

Demand for the Jackson hologram was considerable, but in the end Branca and the estate felt it needed to be shown with a live audience.

“It’s so important to experience Michael Jackson in a live setting,” Branca says. “This is something where we wanted a live performance in front of a live audience and nothing speaks to that more than an awards show.”

MJ Hologram: How They Did It! by CBS / PEOPLE

Bild

Michael Jackson hologram performance: Why it almost didn’t happen!
Nearly five years after his death, Michael Jackson appeared onstage at Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards. A virtual version of the King of Pop performed a song from his newly released album “Xscape.”

But, as Ben Tracy reports, the computer-generated show almost didn’t go on.

It looked like Jackson, sounded like Jackson, and certainly moved like Jackson. But it was a hologram performing the late pop star’s song called “Slave to the Rhythm.”

Jackson recorded the song in 1991, but never released it. So the image that wowed the crowd Sunday night was created entirely on a computer and not from a past performance.

Tyler Hubbard, of the performing act Florida Georgia Line, said the hologram was “as real as it gets. And I mean, I was sitting there trying to figure out, is he, is he here?”

The song is one of eight tracks on a new album of unreleased and updated Jackson music, which has the pop star back on the pop charts with those he inspired.

M. Tye Comer, a Billboard.com editor, said, “You can look at people like Pharrell and Justin Timberlake who are continuing the sound he pioneered with his music. There’s not a performer in pop music that doesn’t owe something to Michael Jackson.”

But the Jackson show fans saw Sunday night was nearly blocked by the company that says it owns the rights to the hologram technology.

It owns the patents behind the hologram performance of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, which both shocked and delighted fans at the Coachella music festival two years ago. On Friday, a judge denied the company’s claim trying to stop the Jackson performance.

In fact, a Jackson hologram has been performing in Las Vegas for nearly a year. It’s the emotional climax of Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to the late artist, but Cirque du Soleil purposely does not allow it to be seen outside of the show.

“He left such a legacy behind, so I think that he’s always going to be with us whether there’s new music released or not,” Comer said.

With new music and new technology, the King of Pop apparently doesn’t intend to relinquish his throne.

The image of Michael Jackson that moonwalked across the stage during Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards can be called thrilling, memorable and cutting-edge – but it can’t be called a hologram.”It’s a whole new technology that we’re not really revealing the details of which, because Michael never revealed the details of his magic,” Jackson estate spokeswoman Diana Baron told PEOPLE.It was more of “a virtual Michael Jackson,” says Baron, that performed the previously unreleased track, “Slave to the Rhythm.”Flanked by real-life dancers, the footage of the entertainer, who died in 2009 at age 50, was not taken from a previous performance and was created specifically for the awards show.

Although it was teased to audiences days before the awards, the idea of creating a Michael Jackson illusion for the show goes back much further, to October 2012.

Through the next year, the Jackson estate developed the act and was still making changes to it on the morning of the performance.

“Michael always wanted to do these kinds of things,” Baron said. “Really, it starts with Michael Jackson more than anything.”

Family member Jackie Jackson was blown away by the final product and said his late brother would have given his approval.

“When [the illusion of Michael Jackson] started dancing, unbelievable,” Jackie told PEOPLE after the performance. “It took me back. If Michael was here, he would say, ‘thumbs up!’ “
