Fans Gather At MJ Statue, Netherlands

Beitragvon Remember MJ » 30. Jun 2011, 22:01

On June 25, the second anniversary of Michael Jackson's death, fans from around the world gathered in places like his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the gates of his beloved Neverland Valley Ranch. But, fans in the Netherlands gathered at some place a bit more unusual. In the parking lot of a McDonalds.

If you have traveled in the Netherlands and ventured outside of Amsterdam towards Eindhoven, you may have passed an interesting statue in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant visible from the highway. It is here you will find one of the only remaining 32 foot tall statues of Michael Jackson built during his HIStory: Past, Present & Future, Book 1 release in 1995.

There were originally nine statues in total.

Over the course of the weekend, fans from various parts of the Netherlands and neighboring countries poured into the parking lot of this McDonalds in Best to leave flowers, say a prayer, pay their respects, or just to see the memorial in person.

There is a Facebook page for the Michael Jackson statue that has photos of the statue surrounded by all the candles, and flowers. There is also a video of the fans at the statue.

There were plans to have a plane fly over the statue with a memorial banner on Sunday, June 26, however, the winds ultimately proved to be too strong. That fly over has since been postponed until August 29th, Michael Jackson's Birthday.

It is not known what happened to the other eight HIStory statues. According to Pop History Dig, some may have ended up in various parks at one point, but this location in the Netherlands may be the only permanent installation.

If you are interested in visiting the Michael Jackson statue during your travels in the Netherlands, the address is:

Eindhovenseweg Zuid 59
5683 PW Best

It is located next door to the big Volvo building in the parking lot of McDonalds. The McDonalds is filled with fun and iconic Rock-n-Roll memorabilia so, not only is it a fitting place for the statue, but it's worth a stop in as well.

Hallo,

Vielleicht machen wir ja mal wieder was in de nederland...

Viele Grüße
Brigitte

Hallo,
jetzt wäre es interessant, ob es deswegen auch wieder Ärger mit Bravado und den Nachlassverwaltern gibt...
Und der Weg zur Hölle war dann in Fulham sehr weit, er führte dann wohl zum Verkauf...

Michael Jackson muss gehen!

The Statues of Cultural Icons in Rio / Including MJ

Beitragvon Remember MJ » 20. Nov 2013, 23:19

By Michela DellaMonica, Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — Every city marks its history with monuments and statues, and Rio is no different. Throughout the Cidade Maravilhos there are icons honoring historical figures such as of nobleman and battle officers, however the majority of statues are of artists and musicians who helped shape the city’s culture.

Typical bronze statues of great writers, poets, composers and idealists are found throughout all of the neighborhoods from park benches to city sidewalks.

Perhaps one of the most recognizable bronze statue in Rio de Janeiro to visit is of Michael Jackson in Morro Santa Marta (or Dona Marta) in Botafogo.

The statue of the “King of Pop” was created by cartoonist Ique, who has also designed other statues around the city, and is in the same location where the music video for “They Don’t Really Care About Us” was filmed in 1996.

The statue was inaugurated a year after Jackson’s death in 2010 and also has a nearby mosaic by Brazilian pop artist Romero Britto.

Rio Proud Of The Bronze Michael Jackson Statue

Bild

THEY are proud of the bronze Michael Jackson statue that stands on the edge of a little square in the Santa Marta favela in Rio de Janeiro.

“It’s the only one in Rio,” says Thiago Firmino, 32, a DJ, local resident and our tour guide. Its arms stretch out to embrace a dizzying view of Rio, and of the shanty town that tumbles down the hillside below. On the wall behind it is a Michael Jackson mosaic.

It was here that director Spike Lee filmed scenes for the video to Jackson’s 1996 hit They Don’t Care About Us. Rio authorities originally opposed the video because they felt filming in a favela would show a negative side of the city, which at the time was bidding to host the 2004 Olympics.

Nearly two decades later, with both the 2014 World Cup final and the 2016 Olympics set to be staged here, Rio is no longer quite so ashamed of its favelas. Officially, it has 763 (according to the 2010 census), and they are home to almost 1.4 million people, or 22 per cent of the city’s population.

Lee’s video plays on a loop in the tourist shop that Thiago’s parents run on the square, Praca Cantao. The alleyways in which Jackson danced seem little changed but lower down, a square at the foot of the favela has been brightened up with a 7000sq m lick of paint.

The Favela Painting art project, created by Dutch duo Haas&Hahn, with the aim of boosting community pride, has seen 34 houses painted in a rainbow of bright colours.

In 2008, Santa Marta was the first favela in Rio to be “pacified” under a state program to expel its drug gangs by installing a police base and initiating social change projects. Since then, another 34 favelas have been pacified. Santa Marta is held up as the model and has become a stop-off for visiting celebrities, such as Madonna and Beyonce.

They come to see the effects of pacification: creches, new houses, concrete steps instead of treacherous muddy tracks, and a free tram that glides up at a 45 per cent angle to help its 6500 or so residents get up and down what is essentially a 1000m mountain covered in rough brick, breezeblock and even wooden houses, just below the Christ the Redeemer statue.

In what used to be one of Rio’s most violent slums, residents are turning to tourism. Today, Thiago’s clients are two Dutch tourists, and he has recruited student Pedro Monteiro to translate. The Dutch wander wide-eyed through the favela. “I like it very much,” says Mirko van Denderen, a teacher. “The strange buildings … “

Both peek into Thiago’s house, impressed by the contrast between its rugged raw-brick exterior, and its neat living room, fitted kitchen and flat-screen television. “The majority of houses are cool inside, all done up,” says Thiago. “It demystifies it.”

Tours such as Thiago’s offer a glimpse of another side of Brazilian life. But tourists should be aware these are tours of places where very poor people live, which some might find difficult. It’s very useful to have a guide who lives in the area: they’ll be accepted by local people, and are unlikely to gloss over issues the favela faces.

Pedro points out handmade signs protesting at the forced removals of dwellings that perch precariously at the very top of Santa Marta. “Property speculation,” says Thiago.

This used to be one of Rio’s most violent slums, and was controlled by the Commando Vermelho (Red Command) drug gang. Now, like Thiago, residents of pacified favelas such as this are turning to tourism.

Roberto de Conceicao is carrying his shopping up the hill. He likes the tours and says: “We meet new people. Thiago is from here.” Paulo Roberto is selling mobile phone cases, pens and Santa Marta T-shirts designed by his 11-year-old son, on a little stall. “We are more and more involved. I live from this now,” he smiles.

MICHAEL JACKSON’S STATUE IN RIO DE JANEIRO A VICTIM OF VANDALISM

It looks like vandalism of statues in Rio De Janeiro is becoming a trend.First with the statue of Carlos Drummond de Andrade at the Copacabana Beach with at least 10 episodes, and now with Michael Jackson’s statue that had its glasses stolen. Photos posted on Tuesday 21st of April on Facebook by Thiago Firmino, resident and tour guide of Santa Marta, in Botafogo, which is in Rio’s South Zone, show Michael’s image without the prop.

The iconic bronze statue made by Ique cartoonist is captured in metal with outstretched arms on a plinth on a veranda in the Santa Marta slum overlooking the rest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. So serious was the disappearance of the glasses that officers from the favela’s resident UPP – the Pacifying Police Unit – swept the community’s shanty huts looking for the lost accessory but without success. Tourist guide Thiago Firmino noticed
the sunglasses had been wrenched off the Michael Jackson statue yesterday as he led visitors around the area.

He told O Globo newspaper:
“I was walking with a group and when we got there to take pictures, Michael Jackson’s glasses were gone.” He added, “Everyone knows that image, all tourists want to visit the statue. It is a community asset that was vandalized.”

The statue was unveiled in 2010, one year after the King of Pop’s death at the age of 50. Michael’s 1996 short film for his song ‘They Don’t Care About Us’ was shot in Rio de Janeiro. It starred people from Santa Marta and brought the favela international fame. The gazebo where Michael recorded part of his famous short film is one of the community’s main sights.

According to Tuesday’s report of the theft by Thiago Firmino, he stated in an interview that another resident may know where the missing glasses might be. The glasses which were broken, were delivered later by Thiago to the Pacifying Police Unit (UPP). According to the Head of the Unit, the glasses were taken back to Thiago by a resident who declined to be identified.

Firmino also said that residents were upset about the disappearance of the object. “Several residents are upset with what happened and today I just made some enquiries and looked in some places and finally found the glasses. An absurd act that I hope doesn’t happen again,” he told O Globo newspaper.
